Birmingham welcomes the
London 2012 Olympics

Various dates, region wide
The Cultural Olympiad is attracting leading artists from all over the world to the West Midlands to celebrate London 2012 through dance, music, theatre, film and digital. 
Birmingham Airport is suitably adorned (see right) to welcome athletes and fans into the country as the Olympic arrivals begin - the US and Jamaican Track & Field teams are the city's latest guests, who have arrived to complete their final training here ahead of the Games.

Jamaican Summer

Throughout summer, various venues
Birmingham is hosting a number of sizzling events to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jamaican independence. Also coinciding with the visit of the Jamaican Track and Field Olympic team.

Mittwoch aus Licht - Wednesday from Light

22-25 August, Argyle Works, Great Barr Sreet
The world premiere of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s opera Mittwoch aus Licht by Birmingham Opera Company, comprising a string quartet performing in helicopters, electronic and acoustic music and a dancing camel. This will be the first time the opera, often thought to be unstageable, has been performed in its entirety.

Pharaoh: King of Egypt

Until 14 October, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (BMAG) 
The UK's largest ever exhibition of over 130 ancient Egyptian artefacts on loan from the British Museum. See stunning examples of sculpture, jewellery, papyri and objects related to Egyptian burials.

The International Festival of Glass

24-27 August, Stourbridge's Glass Quarter 
Celebrating the unique glass making heritage of the area as well as the emergence of a new era of contemporary glass making. The festival includes the prestigious British Glass Biennale exhibition.


The Aviva Birmingham Grand Prix

26 August, Alexander Stadium
Some of the world’s best athletes will go head-to-head as the most exciting summer of athletics this country has ever seen draws to a close.


Moseley Folk Festival 2012 

31 August - 2 September, Moseley Park 
An inner city Shangri-la bringing together people from all ages and backgrounds to witness folk legends playing alongside their contemporaries.
